Beyond the studio

The sound of the room.

Ensembles, contemporary music, live sound and film. Recording and mixing for musicians who play together, sound systems for festivals in historic churches, and music for the screen — from microphone placement and stage plots to the final master.

Cantus Portugueses

Cantus Portugueses is a group of musicians from the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln who give traditional Portuguese melodies new arrangements, with elements of classical music. On both albums, about twenty of them played together in one room, the way they play on stage — and I took each record from the first microphone to the final master.

Cantus Portugueses

A strictly acoustic setup: twenty musicians performing together, with a network of about thirty microphones.

Microphone placement was planned to manage bleed between instruments and keep phase coherence, so the record keeps the natural interplay and the dynamic range of the ensemble.

Cantus Portugueses II

A new palette: the sharp attack of adufe and Portuguese guitar next to the deep, resonant textures of bassoon and double bass.

The mix gives each instrument its own place in the spectrum and depth in the stereo image, without losing the organic sound of the room.

Jacqueline Dourado — Lua do meio-dia

In Guimarães Álvares’s Lua do meio-dia, for solo timpani and ensemble, the timpani step out of the back row and become the solo voice, surrounded by six percussionists, pianos and celesta. Jacqueline Dourado played the solo, with Susanne Blumenthal conducting, in the concert hall of the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln.

A recording with many moving parts — a soloist, a conductor and ten players around her. I recorded and mixed it under the supervision of sound engineer Benjamin Bentz, who also mastered it, keeping the weight of the timpani in front without losing the detail of the ensemble behind it.

speGTRa Guitar Festival — Chordophon X

The festival’s main concert brought sixteen guitars, a four-voice choir, percussion, winds, strings and double bass to the Auferstehungskirche am Kupferofen — a historic church with challenging natural acoustics — in four formations, with stage changes between groups.

I conceived, set up and ran the sound system: front of house and monitors, plus system design, equipment specification, coordination with the rental partner and the project budget.

SoundLinks Festival

SoundLinks is the biennial festival founded by the Cologne Guitar Quartet. I ran live sound for two of its concerts: the Fusion Project at Alte Feuerwache, celebrating the quartet's 10th anniversary with classical music, world music and live electronics,

and Hybrid Moments at Lutherkirche Südstadt, where Duo Bögeholz/Mosalini (guitar and bandoneón) met the Danel String Quartet in a programme of tango and South American repertoire.
